Dot's Home: A Narrative-Driven Video Game That Explores Race, Place, and Home

Dot's Home is a free, single-player, 2D video game available on iPhone that takes players on a journey through the history of a young Black woman's family in Detroit. The game follows her life in her grandmother's home and travels through time to relive key moments in her family's history where race, place, and home collide in difficult choices.

The game aims to show players the harmful systems that dictate our relationship to race and place through the eyes of those most impacted. By placing players in scenarios where they have to make choices about where and how to live in the midst of redlining, urban renewal, and gentrification, Dot's Home asks a fundamental question - "How did your family end up where they are today, and how much choice did they really have in that journey?"

Dot's Home is a production of the Rise-Home Stories project, a creative collaboration between multimedia storytellers and housing and land justice advocates who have come together over three years to transform the stories we tell about our communities and reimagine their past, present, and future. The game is a unique and thought-provoking experience that provides a new perspective on the history of race and place in America.
